1. Contraindications

  • Pacemakers and Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillators (ICDs): Strictly prohibited for use on patients or by operators with cardiac pacemakers, ICDs, or other active implantable medical devices. The strong magnetic fields generated by the internal stacks/coils may cause severe electromagnetic interference (EMI) and disrupt the function of the implant.

  • Known Infectious Diseases: DO NOT use on patients diagnosed with active infectious diseases transmitted via aerosols or droplets (e.g., active tuberculosis, acute hepatitis B/C, HIV, etc.).

  • Severe Respiratory Compromise: Prohibited for use on patients with severe Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), asthma, or dysphagia (difficulty swallowing) to prevent risk of asphyxiation caused by the heavy water spray and aerosols.

  • Unstable Cardiovascular Conditions: DO NOT use on patients who have recently suffered a myocardial infarction (heart attack) or those with unstable angina pectoris.

2. Warnings

  • Thermal Tissue Damage (Stack Overheating): NEVER operate the handpiece without adequate water/coolant flow. Magnetostrictive inserts rely heavily on water flow to cool both the internal metal stack and the scaling tip. Insufficient water will cause immediate overheating, leading to irreversible thermal damage to the dental pulp or oral soft tissues.

  • Insert/Tip Breakage and Aspiration Risk: Inspect the insert and the metal stack before each use. Worn, bent, or dropped inserts may fracture or lose frequency adaptation during operation, posing a risk of aspiration. Use a manufacturer-approved insert wear guide regularly.

  • Electromagnetic Safety: Do not use radio frequency (RF) communications equipment close to this device, as magnetostrictive units are highly sensitive to and can generate electromagnetic interference.

3. Precautions

  • Clinical Technique (Elliptical Motion): Magnetostrictive tips vibrate in an elliptical motion, meaning all sides of the tip (point, concave, convex, and lateral sides) are active. NEVER apply the tip point directly at a 90-degree angle to the tooth. Use the lateral sides or the back of the insert, keeping the tip adapted to the tooth surface with a light, feather-touch pressure.

  • Insert Care and Handling: Handle the metal strips (stack) with extreme care. Bending or scratching the stack will alter the resonance frequency and ruin the insert.

  • Restorative Material Limitations: Avoid direct contact of the active tip with porcelain crowns, composite resins, or dental implants (unless using a specialized plastic-sleeved insert) to prevent surface alterations.

  • Water Quality and Infection Control: Water supply must meet potable standards. Flush the waterlines for 2 to 3 minutes at the start of each day and between patients.
