Pacemakers and Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillators (ICDs): Although piezoelectric systems utilize ceramic crystals and produce minimal electromagnetic fields, as a maximum safety precaution and to comply with rigorous regulatory standards, avoid use or consult the patient’s cardiologist prior to treatment if the patient or operator has an active implantable device.
Known Infectious Diseases: DO NOT use on patients diagnosed with active infectious diseases transmitted via aerosols or droplets (e.g., active tuberculosis, acute hepatitis B/C, HIV, etc.).
Severe Respiratory Compromise: Prohibited for use on patients with severe Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), asthma, or dysphagia (difficulty swallowing) to prevent risk of asphyxiation caused by the water spray and aerosols.
Unstable Cardiovascular Conditions: DO NOT use on patients who have recently suffered a myocardial infarction (heart attack) or those with unstable angina pectoris.
Thermal Tissue Damage (Tip Friction): NEVER operate the scaling tip without adequate water/coolant flow. Piezoelectric tips generate localized friction heat rapidly at the contact point. Operating without sufficient water supply will cause irreversible thermal damage to the dental pulp or burns to oral soft tissues.
Tip Breakage and Aspiration Risk: Inspect the scaling tip before each use. Worn, bent, or cracked tips may fracture instantly under high-frequency linear vibration, posing a risk of aspiration. Use a professional tip wear guide to check the wear status regularly.
Electrical Safety: To prevent electric shock, the device housing must not be disassembled by unauthorized personnel.
Clinical Technique (Linear Motion): Piezoelectric tips vibrate in a linear (back-and-forth) motion, meaning only the lateral sides of the tip are active. NEVER apply the tip apex (point) at a 90-degree angle directly to the tooth surface, as this causes severe hammering, discomfort, and root damage. Maintain the lateral side of the tip parallel to the tooth surface (angle less than 15 degrees) using a light pen-grasp technique.
Proper Tip Tightening (Torque Wrench): Always use the dedicated torque wrench supplied by the manufacturer to attach and tighten the tip. Overtightening can strip the handpiece threads, while undertightening will damp the vibration and cause handpiece overheating.
Restorative Material Limitations: Avoid direct contact of the scaling tip with porcelain crowns, composite resins, or dental implants (unless using a specialized carbon fiber/PEEK implant-safe tip) to avoid chipping or scratching.
Water Quality and Infection Control: Water supply must meet potable standards. Flush the waterlines for 2 to 3 minutes at the start of each day and between patients.
